Leading anti-tobacco authority in France recommends e-cigarettes as alternative to traditional tobacco products12.07.16
PARIS, July 12, 2016 – Fontem Ventures today welcomed new guidance from France’s Tabac Info Service – run by Public Health France, a government body – suggesting electronic cigarettes are an effective tool for smokers looking to reduce or replace tobacco consumption.
Tabac Info Service, the public stop smoking campaign in France, has released new guidance stating that “according to the latest work of the High Council on Public Health (Haut Conseil de la Santé Publique), electronic cigarettes can constitute a tool to help stop or reduce consumption of tobacco“ and also “reduce the risk of developing serious illnesses such as cancer”.
The campaign, run by government body Public Health France (Santé publique France), states that “e-cigarettes” are “much less harmful than traditional cigarettes” and that “vapers who continue smoking reduce their tobacco consumption by an average of nine cigarettes”, meaning that vaping can be a “progressive tool for stopping smoking”.
France’s position on vaping has shifted in the face of overwhelming scientific and public health evidence, including recent statements by Public Health England (link here) pointing out that e-cigarettes are significantly less harmful than smoking, last year’s report from Public Health England, a recent report by the Royal College of Physicians, and the Belgian Superior Health Council’sadvice that e-cigarettes may be used as a smoking cessation tool.
“This advice is extremely welcome, as it shows that France is following in the footsteps of other European countries and recognising that vaping is significantly less harmful than smoking traditional tobacco products and should be encouraged as an alternative,” said Marc Michelsen, Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs and Communications. “Indeed, a recent study in Addiction showed vaping has helped 6.1 million people across the European Union to quit smoking.”
“We hope that more European countries will heed this advice and take a serious look at the public health evidence in favour of electronic cigarettes as an alternative for traditional tobacco products,” Michelsen added. “We are confident that if they do, they will come to similar conclusions.”
