Fontem Ventures, owner of the global vape brand blu, responds to reports linking the recent incidents of respiratory illnesses and deaths in the US to vaping products

Amsterdam- September 10th – We are deeply concerned by reports linking respiratory illnesses and deaths to the use of vaping products – we believe it is imperative that the CDC investigates these instances and urge the publication of the results as soon as possible. Reports of numerous people developing symptoms of severe lung illnesses like pneumonia indicate a new phenomenon which the CDC and FDA have linked to e-liquids that contain illicit or unknown substances.

The current reports of illnesses appear to be related to vape devices and liquids that contain vitamin E acetate and other oils. The FDA has warned consumers to “avoid buying vaping products of any kind on the street, and to refrain from using THC oil or modifying/adding any substances to products purchased in stores”. This serves as an important reminder that vaping products should conform to the highest scientifically-based quality, manufacturing, and safety standards to protect consumers and ensure products remain available to their intended audience of current adult vapers and smokers seeking an alternative to traditional combustible cigarettes.

“All of our blu vaping products, their ingredients and the vapour produced undergo thorough scientific assessment prior to manufacture and sale. Our e-liquid ingredient selection is guided by toxicological principles and all our e-liquid ingredients undergo a rigorous assessment process. None of blu’s vaping products contain THC, vitamin E acetate, mineral oils or animal fats” said Dr Joe Thompson, Group Science and Regulatory Affairs Director. “blu has been an established business in the US for over 10 years and our message to concerned vapers is that they should purchase vaping products from reputable brands and retailers and ensure that products are properly sealed, packaged and labelled.”

We believe that pod-based vape systems offer the best opportunity to ensure that both the ingredients and the generated vapour aerosol fall within pre-defined and regulated standards. We support regulatory measures that limit the ability of users to alter the generated e-vapour aerosol and the ingredients that can be used within them.
