Fontem Ventures develops real-time method for measuring volatile organic compounds in e-cigarette aerosols22.02.16
Amsterdam, 22 February 2016 – Fontem Ventures today announced it has developed an innovative real-time analytical method for analysing volatile compounds in e-cigarette aerosols.
The system, established in partnership with IONICON Analytik GmbH in Austria – the world leader in ultra sensitive real-time trace gas analysis – provides a fast, novel sampling set up for the analysis of both mainstream and exhaled e-cigarette aerosols based on Proton Transfer Reaction Mass Spectrometry (PTR-MS).
“Most studies to-date designed to measure compounds in e-cigarette aerosols, use standardised offline technologies which are both time-consuming and fail to take into consideration the impact of any puff-by-puff variations on the aerosol composition” said Dr. Grant O’Connell, Vice President of Corporate, Regulatory and Scientific Affairs. “By contrast, this new method allows us to test e-cigarette aerosols in a more meaningful way as we can study and replicate real e-cigarette use behaviours.”
The experimental method allows a broad variety of online puff-by-puff e-cigarette studies to be conducted, which is important for the evaluation of e-cigarettes from both a consumer and a bystander perspective. For example, the impact of changing e-cigarette device parameters such as voltage and battery power on aerosol composition could be analysed in real-time, on a puff-by-puff basis.

Too often, we see studies about vaping products based on flawed scientific methods.
