Pod based vape devices
Pod Vape Devices
Pod-based vaping systems, such as myblu, offer adult smokers a consistent vaping experience which closely replicates smoking and product quality they can trust.
- Closed systems are manufactured and filled in a cleanroom environment
- Pods are designed not to be tampered with so consumers can be confident of the quality of the e-liquid.
- E-liquid ingredient selection is tightly controlled and undergoes rigorous assessment processes
- The aerosol generated from a closed pod systems falls within pre-defined and regulated standards
The ability to modify an open vape device and to customize e-liquids could expose vapers to potential health and safety risks especially with inexperienced /new vapers. We believe regulatory measures should be applied to limit the ability of users to alter the aerosol generated by a vape device or to add ingredients to e-liquids that were not intended by the manufacturer.
Closed vs Open Vaping Systems
Generally, vape products are either closed or open systems. Closed systems feature a closed cartridge or pod containing an e-liquid, whereby consumers insert a replacement cartridge or pod into the device to continue vaping. Pods are individually flow wrapped or blister packed, and the quality of the e-liquid in the pod is tightly quality controlled as is the aerosol generated when using the device.
Open systems, often referred to as MODS because they have advanced features that can be ‘modified’, are a highly variable group of devices that tend to be bigger and more powerful than pod vape devices. Open systems are popular with advanced vape hobbists, and users need to refill an e-liquid tank attached to the vape battery themselves. The set-up of an open device is more complex as it requires manual cleaning, and periodic changing of the wick and coil.
Open system can be constructed with a variety of battery power capacities, and allow consumers to vary the voltage of the device, which could under certain circumstances lead to battery problems or accidents for inexperienced vapers. See our feature on battery safety for more information
Adult Smoker Choice
Pod vapes are generally available at the same type of retail stores that adult smokers buy their cigarettes such as petrol stations, tobacconists’, convenience stores and supermarkets. Consumer research has shown that many adult smokers are discouraged from vaping as they are not comfortable visiting independent vape stores, and are not attracted to vape ‘hobbist’ culture.
Due to advertising restrictions in many markets, retailer knowledge in ‘traditional stores’ may not be as comprehensive as in the independent vape sector which may prevents adult smoker transitioning to vape. We believe that more adult smoker education about tobacco harm reduction through vape products like myblu is important.
US Lung Illness (EVALI)
Open system vape devices provide maximum opportunity for customisation by users. They can be used to deliver illicit substances, including DIY liquids or liquids acquired from unknown or unauthorised sources.
This has been demonstrated recently in the US, where Federal and State scientists believe that e-liquids containing vitamin E acetate were responsible for vaping-related lung injury and illness (EVALI). In response, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended, “not [to] modify e-cigarette products or add any substances to these products that are not intended by the manufacturer.”
We believe raising standards across the category will guarantee consistency amongst vapour product manufacturers in addition to boosting consumer trust in the category.
