Fontem Ventures welcomes Public Health England statement and guidance on e-cigarettes

LONDON, July 6, 2016 - Fontem Ventures welcomes joint statement on e-cigarettes by Public Health England and other UK public health organisations, endorsing the role of the devices in smoking cessation, and Public Health England guidance on vaping in public places clearly stating there is no evidence of harm from second-hand e-cigarette vapour.

Public Health England has released a statement alongside Action on Smoking and Health (ASH), the British Lung Foundation, Cancer Research UK, Public Health Action, the Royal College of Physicians and the Royal Society for Public Health UK, among other organisations. It states that “e-cigarettes are significantly less harmful than smoking… Over 1.3 million UK e-cigarette users have completely stopped smoking.”

Additionally, Public Health England has published advice today on vaping in public places for employers and organisations. The advice underlines that employers should be free to set their own policies, but that, “policies should take account of the evidence and clearly distinguish vaping from smoking.” It points out that “There is currently no evidence of harm from second-hand e-cigarette vapour and the risks are likely to be extremely low. There is also no evidence so far that e-cigarettes are acting as a route into smoking for young people” and employers should “[s]upport smokers to stop smoking and stay smoke free.”

This builds on last year’s report from Public Health England, a recent report by the Royal College of Physicians, and the Belgian Superior Health Council’s advice that e-cigarettes may be used as a smoking cessation tool.

“This advice confirms an increasing consensus that vaping and e-cigarette use is significantly less harmful than smoking traditional tobacco products and should be encouraged as an alternative to smoking,” underlined Marc Michelsen, Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs and Communications. “While e-cigarettes are not marketed as smoking cessation products, a recent study in Addiction showed that vaping has helped 6.1 million people across the European Union to quit smoking.”

“Furthermore, Public Health England and others have underlined that vaping in public places has no significant impact on air quality – which should give pause to public authorities looking to ban the practice,” Michelsen stated. “We hope that this provides peace of mind to employers around the world looking to set measured policies on indoor vaping.”
